Why should I support Shrimp Welfare Project?

Massive issue

Shrimp suffer..

  • The scientific consensus is that shrimp can experience pain and distress
  • Shrimp sentience and/or the need to protect their welfare is recognised by law in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and Austria

Standard industry practices are cruel..

  • Painful death: The vast majority are slaughtered by being suffocated, fully conscious. They're removed from water and left to die, often taking over an hour.
  • Eyestalk ablation: Hatcheries still practice crushing or cutting off the eyestalk of female shrimps to make them become fertile faster.
  • Rampant disease: Outbreaks of infectious disease are very common in shrimp farms because the animals are packed so closely together. This kills as much as 40% of all farmed shrimp in some years.

Roughly 440 billion shrimp are slaughtered in farms each year!

This is more than all farmed chickens, cows, and pigs combined. It's 4x the number of humans that have ever lived. And yet, because they're hard to empathize with, the plight of shrimp gets very little attention.

Extraordinary charity

Your donation goes incredibly far..

Just $1 can improve welfare for around 1,500 animals, making them one of the most impactful animal charities to donate to by number of animals helped per dollar.

Spare shrimp from suffering at slaughter:

Shrimp Welfare Project work directly with shrimp producers to have them stun shrimp before slaughter, rendering them unconscious. They provide the electrical stunning equipment to industry, removing the financial blocker to industry-wide change. This simple, practical approach has already secured commitments to humanely stun approximately 4 billion shrimp each year.

Pioneer a better future

As the first organization dedicated to shrimp welfare, SWP is establishing the standards that will shape how billions of animals are treated for decades to come. They work with both retailers and producers to transform industry practices permanently.
